Green Is Good
I have some confessions to make:
I care about the environment.
I care about climate change.
I see where we are.
I'm worried.
I'm hopeful.
I've seen things be worse.
I've seen things get better.
Some of these confessions might not seem like much.
Some of these confessions might beggar belief.
I humbly hope you might think these things, too.
This is a new Leaflet all about the environment.
I'm just another old geek on the internet, and I'm on a few missions:
To do as much good as I can.
To bring the old internet back with At Protocol.
To empower individuals with PowerShell.
To share knowledge and perspective.
To connect with people that also care
This publication is a chance to learn about Leaflet and try to bring some environmental awareness to the world.
With that in mind, let me flip an old script and make a (hopefully) uncontroversial argument:
Green Is Good
Green, for lack of a better word, is good.
Green is right.
Green clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.
Green, in all of its forms -- Green for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of humankind.
And green -- you mark my words -- will not only save our planet, but that other malfunctioning entity called the USA.
(Old movie fans may get exactly what I'm paraphrasing here.)
Changing just a few words and the points work well.
Let's prove it:
Green Is Right
I do not know your morals or your faith. I know why I believe green is right.
If you can logically accept that environmental destruction has a non-zero chance of hurting the human race, I think you should be able to understand that choosing to possibly/probably hurt the human race is a bad thing.
I might not believe in normal, but I believe in right and wrong.
I believe green is right. You can believe what you choose.
Green Clarifies
Green can cut through complex decision making.
Green can help you understand the wonderful world around us, and the unexpected side effects of rash actions.
Green can give you a pause for prudence.
Green clarifies.
Green can sadly clarify people's political persuasions. I wish it were not so, and believe it should not be.
Because I believe Green is right, I believe green should not be political.
Green clarifies.
Green Evolves
Nature has been innovating far longer than the human race.
Evolution is the foundation of nature.
For billions of years, life has been learning and growing.
Green evolves constantly in the face of pressue.
Green is the source of boundless inspiration.
Green For Life
I choose to be green because I choose life.
This choice came early for me, and is lifelong.
I don't know what you think, but I think that life is a great reason to go green.
I hope that once people "go green", they go green for life.
You can choose what you will. I choose life.
Green For Life.
Green for Money
Green for money is good, too. As at least one certain billionaire proves, there's money to be made in green.
We are dealing with huge challenges to our environment, and there's money to be made in solving them.
Each step towards stability is a step towards lesser systemic risk.
If we didn't have volatile energy sources, we'd have a lot less global volatility. People are currently acutely aware of this, as we're in the middle of the greatest oil supply shock since the 1970s.
If we don't have to pay extractive costs, we have more energy.
If we learn to work with nature, we don't have to work against it.
Green is money.
Green for Love
I think love isn't a bad reason to green, either.
Maybe you don't care about any of this, but you know someone that does. Being a bit greener on their behalf can't be the worst thing in the world.
I believe if we truly care about people, we care about what they actually think (not just what we think they think).
I believe we should care about people and the world we live in.
You may make your choices.
I am Green for Love.
Green for Knowledge
I am endlessly curious.
I seek to understand as much as I can about the world.
Nature is full a lessons.
If you're listening to learn from life, the world has a way of teaching you things.
I have never understood those who are anti-intellectual, because I have always loved learning.
You may make up your mind.
I am Green for Knowledge
Green Humankind
There are many lenses thru which we can think of history.
One lens is of us learning about and influencing our environment.
Throughout all of human history, we've learned how to do more and more with the world around us. We've also learned what it can cost us.
I believe our story is one of learning how to work with our environment.
I believe that the more we learn about this, the more benefits we bring to humankind.
I hope for a future in greater symbiosis with our world.
I believe in a Green Humankind.
Save the Planet
I believe we should all work to save the planet.
I am old enough to remember when this phrase was the source of constant derision. Maybe it still is.
Maybe we can't do much. Maybe all we can do is talk. Maybe we can change things. Maybe things have been changing for decades.
Maybe, just maybe, we might want to try.
If you believe there is a non-zero chance of catasrophe, please believe that there's also a non-zero chance of avoiding calamity.
Please try to save the planet.
It's the only one we've got.
There's good news:
We Are Saving the Planet
Despite decades of hemming and hawing, the world has moved more and more in renewable directions. Progress has accelerated at a greater than our original damage.
In 1996, the United States produced about 92 megawatts of renewable energy. By 2026, the United States is estimated to have 545 gigawatts of renewable energy. That's about 6x more!
We've made massive improvements since the days of leaded gasoline.
We've faced massive environmental challenges before, and we will do so again.
We need to keep saving our planet, because it is still at risk.
I believe we can be hopeful, because I see how much has changed in my lifetime.
Save our Government
Political turmoil currently consumes the United States of America.
We can all work towards ending it.
The hope in a democratic form of government is that people can change things. This means needing to find consensus on some things.
In my opinion, it means we need to find consensus on right and wrong.
I believe we need to be willing to engage in moral debates with each other, and we need to be willing to be wrong.
I believe there are a lot of people who don't see Green as Good.
I believe there are a lot of people that are wrong.
Most of my life, more and more has been changing for the better.
Change has often been fiercely resisted. Change is a law of life.
Change continues to come because we want change. Most of us want changes for the better.
I believe green changes are fertile ground for improvement, especially now.
I believe Green is Good.
Do you?
